ELD Proposal Open for Comments

The clock has started for comments on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s proposed electronic log mandate.

The proposal will be published in the Federal Register Friday March 28, starting a two-month period when the agency will accept comments.

At the core of the 256-page proposal is the requirement that interstate drivers who fill out paper logs must eventually switch to electronic logs.

It also covers technical standards for the electronic logging devices (ELDs) and the supporting documents that regulators need to confirm compliance. And it sets requirements to ensure that electronic logs are not used to harass drivers.

After the agency reviews the comments and publishes a final rule, perhaps later this year, carriers will have two years to comply. Carriers that already have recording devices that meet current specifications would have an additional two years to bring their devices into compliance with the new specifications.

The comments will spell out the detailed reactions of the various constituents.

While larger trucking companies generally support ELDs, they may have concerns about some of the technical details, the supporting documents requirements or the agency’s approach to grandfathering devices already in use.

Owner-operators have long opposed ELDs and may not be satisfied by the agency’s approach to harassment prevention.

    I will sell my truck and trailer if Electronic Logs are forced on me! So tired of stupid Government laws being shoved up my ass by Congress and senate who are a waste of human beings

    I think its a invasion of privacy we all ready went through the phone taps with the FBI and other countries that they taped with electronic logs they know where your at can check on your hours to use forced dispatch and i work with electronic logs your on your sleeper time yet they send messages all hours even when your sleeping it like texting you have to go back and forth with the dispatcher because some times your or they dont understand what there trying to tell you where a phone call once would of worked and they set them up where you cant turn them off or the volume down it interrupt your sleep time and i have gotten some rude messages because i didn't have the hour on the log to do what they asked where when i had to drive i had to deal with the quail com on my sleeper time i think quail com stands to make a big profit off this America all ready has a shortage of jobs what about the dot officers that run the scales and how many drivers will we louse with a shortage of drivers as is and constly having to find a place to pull over to read or send messages a lot of stats have know ramp parking are we the driver going to be exempt from that law because the company expecting answer right away or your written up by the company as a service failure and pulling to the side of a busy interstate is a safety issue having to pull into hevy traffic in a slow moving semi those are just a few things a driver has to deal with as far as i know we all want to comply with the guide lines dot has set for us but having our privacy rights invaded and put in a dangerous situation is not a good idea

    If and when all these dumb rules go thru I will sell my truck and retire. I've been an o.o. for 37 yrs with none of these rules and everything was just fine til we got all these no-nothing people that have never been in a truck. It is just another money making idea to fatten federal and state employees pockets.

    17 years otr. Own my truck. So far . Hos & Elogs have cost me just over 12,000 per year in lost revenue. Why are we the target for everything? I can not afford anymore electronic gadgets for this truck. Will have to park it & find a better paying job. Elogs are the most stressful thing ever in trucking!!! Hos. 30 min break ! Are we back in high school? The restart is a joke!! Who wants to head into Chicago or ny city after 5:00 am ???

    17 yrs O/O. No accidents. Let's see , 14 hr rule gaveme a 20% cut in pay . ELOGS 2 years ago gave me another 10% cut in pay. H.O.S. change in july/ 2013 . Is costing me $200. Per week. Now you want to raise my truck insurance 40/50% . Do the math. 30 MIN BREAK, very childish ! The restart is the worse joke of all!!!! With ELOGS I am held prisoner!!! At a Truck stop!!!!. FMCSA SCARES ME TO DEATH!!!!. looking for another country to relocate to. This is not America Anymore.

    Follow the money... It is so un-American for the fmcsa to 100% favor big business and not the small trucking companies and carriers, plus millions of O.O. who actually keep America supplied. I DEMAND that 85% of all employees/members of the fmcsa be from small trucking companies, O.O. and carriers,, and 15% from big wealthy trucking companies. You know the large trucking companies I'm referring to,, the ones that can influence the US Congress and the US Senate... Is this freedom of speech falling upon deaf ears ? I think not .
