Con-way Freight announced that Tom Syme surpassed the career milestone of driving 3 million consecutive, accident-free miles. Syme, who started with Con-way as one of its first employees 30 years ago, is the second of Con-way Freight’s 16,000 drivers nationwide to reach this safe-driving achievement.

To put the safe-driving milestone into perspective, 3 million miles is the equivalent of driving 120 times around the full circumference of the Earth or running 114,504 Chicago marathons.

“To have driven this many miles without an accident means a lot to me and my family,” said Syme. “Since I started driving with Con-way Freight, I’ve been impressed with the company’s focus on safety and the resources they provide that have helped me reach this milestone. It takes a lot of dedication to stay safe and I’m proud of my driving record. I like to think I’ve helped make the roads a little safer.”

Syme has been driving professionally for 41 years. He began working at Con-way Freight in May of 1983 and currently works out of the company’s Des Plaines service center. He was previously recognized for 1 million and 2 million mile safety milestones, as well as receiving the 25-year safe working award. He lives in Palatine, Ill., with his wife, Cheryl. In his spare time he enjoys woodworking and is an avid golfer.

Over its 30-year history, Con-way Freight has honored more than 200 of its drivers for surpassing 2 million safe driving miles, and more than 1,600 who have achieved 1 million safe driving miles.
