Recalls Issued For Daimler, Volvo and Navistar Trucks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced three truck makers -- Daimler Trucks North America, Volvo and Navistar International -- are recalling vehicles, for defects including daytime running lights, a battery disconnect switch and an axle bearing retaining nut lock snap ring

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling nearly 43,000 certain model year 2013-2014 Freightliner Cascadia tractors manufactured from May 7, 2012, through March 2, 2013 and equipped with a SAMCAB software version 6.2.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin on vehicles configured to have the turn signals operate as daytime running lights and the “turn-tip” turn signal function activated, the DRLs may not illuminate properly after using the “turn-tip'” function while driving. NHTSA says failure of the DRLs to illuminate reduces visibility to other drivers and increases the risk of a vehicle crash.

The remedy for this recall campaign is still under development. The recall is expected to begin by May 15. Owners may contact DTNA at 1-800-547-0712.DTNA's recall campaign number is FL-641.

Volvo is recalling a little more than 5,200 2012-2014 VHD, VNL and VNM trucks, manufactured from April 18, 2011 through March 14, 2013, equipped with a horizontally mounted remote battery disconnect switch.

NHTSA says the remote battery disconnect switch was manufactured with incorrect hardware allowing the cables to loosen. Additionally, as mounted, the cables may vibrate and chafe.Loose or chafed cables may lead to overheating of the battery cable and switch, which may result in a fire.

Volvo will send owners an interim letter and dealers will replace and relocate the remote battery disconnect switch. The recall is expected to begin on April 5. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-336-393-2000.Volvo's recall campaign number is RVXX1301.

Navistar is recalling more than 1,600 2013 International ProStar commercial trucks, manufactured from January 24, 2012, through January 2, 2013, with feature codes 29AEB and 29AEC (Preset Plus hubs). NHTSA says the axle bearing retaining nut lock snap ring may have not been installed or may have been installed incorrectly which may result in the retainer nut working loose and possibly separating the wheel hub from the axle. Separation of a wheel hub from an axle may increase the risk of a crash.

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any missing axle bearing retainer nut lock snap rings, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin by April 19. Owners may contact Navistar at 1-800-448-7825.Navistar's recall campaign number is 13504.

    I was wondering if you could tell me what guidelines or rules exist outlining the design requirements of Master Battery Switches that are use on road vehicles that carry Hazardous Materials. I'm specifically interested in the Canadian requirements but if the information is relevant to all of North America that would also be useful.

    Regarding the Navistar portion. It's not surprising this happened and that it doesn't happen more often. Years ago Navistar (International) decided to outsource this work to foks that make 11.50 a hour in Ohio and no offense to those people but you get what you pay for and it shows. No proper training, no prior experience, no knownledge of truck/car building and the bottomline of the almighty dollar.
