Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has signed legislation increasing the speed limit on rural interstates from 65 to 70 mph.

In signing the controversial legislation, Vilsack asked the state police to be more aggressive in writing tickets for speeding violations. The governor had initially been opposed to the speed limit increase due to rising vehicle insurance rates. The law also increases the fines that the Iowa State Patrol can issue, raising the fine for going 10 mph over the 60 mph from $121 to $212.
Officials estimate the fine money will bring in $7.6 million a year for the law enforcement and court system.
