Mack Trucks Inc. has agreed to continue its sponsorship of the American Trucking Assns.' Share the Road program, one of the industry's most successful highway safety campaigns.

This marks Mack's third consecutive year as sponsor of this program, which is designed to enhance the safety of America's roadways by teaching car drivers how to safely share the road with tractor-trailers.
According to a joint Department of Transportation and AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study, car drivers cause about 75% of truck-related auto fatalities, and 35% of such accidents occur in a truck's blind spots. By educating people about blind spots, safe merging and stopping distances, ATA and Mack hope to reduce the number of accidents and save lives.
"Mack is very pleased to continue our sponsorship of such an important effort," said Mack President and CEO Paul Vikner. "Enhancing the safety of our nation's roadways is a top priority of Mack, as well as our dealers and our customers. We look forward to again working with the ATA this year to reduce the number of highway incidents."
The Share the Road program uses members of ATA's America's Road Team -- a group of professional truck drivers with exemplary safety records -- as spokespeople. The drivers travel to cities throughout the country and conduct safety demonstrations for the media in an effort to reach the driving public.
"Recently, the Federal Highway Administration announced that new federal highway safety statistics for 2001 show a continued reduction in the nation's large truck fatal crash rate, reaching its lowest point since the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) began keeping large truck safety records in 1975," said ATA President and CEO William J. Canary. "Over the years, the American Trucking Assns. and member companies such as Mack have made tremendous strides in educating the driving public to lower this rate even further. Mack's continued sponsorship of the Share the Road education program goes a long way to help ensure that our roads and highways are as safe as they can possibly be."
Mack is a member of the Volvo Group, a publicly held company headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. With annual sales of approximately $18 billion, Volvo business areas include heavy trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial drive systems, aerospace, and financial services.
