Forty-nine commercial vehicle inspectors received specialized training and competed for honors in the 10th annual North American Inspectors’ Championship August 12-17 in Milwaukee.
The annual North American Inspectors' Championships are sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and are held in conjunction with the National Truck Driving Championship.
Grand Champion was Monty Kinder of Colorado. While Kinder took home the most points out of the U.S. inspectors, the High Points Winners for Canada and Mexico were Ewoud VanGoch of Ontario for Canada, and Armando Garcia, Mexico SCT, for Mexico.
Jeff Dietrich of Iowa took top place in the Level 1 Inspections category, with Angela Rose-Lane of Oregon winning the Haz Mat & Cargo Tank Inspection category.
This year’s program began with training sessions dealing with critical issues, including those prompted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The inspectors shared what they and their agency are doing to combat terrorism. Bob Thomason of the FMCSA National Training Center presented a one-day session, entitled Trucks in Terrorism, to prepare inspectors on how trucks can be used in acts of terrorism. The contestants also took a 60-question examination on the North American inspection program. And two full days were devoted to what the inspectors do every day — inspecting trucks and buses.
