Five trucking companies are being sued in Roanoke, Va., for a January 1999 crash on Interstate 81 that killed four people and injured 20.

According to published reports, the chain-reaction accidents started when a tractor-trailer driven by Douglas Hubert Austin jackknifed on slick roads along a stretch of I-81 in Rockbridge County. Sixteen vehicles were involved, including several trucks. Austin and three people riding in a sport utility vehicle died in the crash.
The suit claims that five trucking companies are to blame because all drivers of the tractor-trailers involved operated in "a careless, reckless and negligent manner." The companies are Austin’s employer, Cal Ark International Inc., along with Celadon Trucking Services Inc., R.C. Moore Inc., Da Boyz Transportation and Star Transport.
This latest lawsuit is one of at least 10 involving the crash. Others have been filed in Lynchburg and Harrisonburg.
