Testifying before the House Subcommittee on Health and Environment, William C. Dement, director of the Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Center at Stanford University Medical Center, stressed that sleep disorders have become one of the nation’s most serious health problems.
Dement also discussed the National Primary Care Project, in which Stanford physicians are providing sleep education and consultation to primary care doctors in two target cities. The project is designed to eliminate the fact that most physicians fail to recognize signs of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia, aims to educate and train physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and plans to devise a national strategy to treat such disorders.
