The drivers of an empty tanker truck and a truck loaded with 400 live chickens were burned to death Wednesday when their vehicles collided on a highway east of Gilroy, Ca.

The eastbound Peterbilt tanker and westbound 1999 Volvo tractor-trailer hit head-on, with the tanker ending up in the middle of the two-lane road, the Volvo down a 30-foot embankment, a California Highway Patrol officer told the San Jose Mercury News.
The CHP officer said the positions of the vehicles made it impossible for investigators to determine which vehicle had crossed into oncoming traffic.
