The Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics has withdrawn its proposal to restrict access to individual carrier data.

Financial and operating data for-hire carriers must submit to BTS is available to the public and widely used by government agencies, insurance companies, industry researchers and other carriers. The proposal would have restricted access to certain operating, employment and financial statistics for three years. BTS now says the proposal was premature. Major changes to the reporting requirements were made last March.
At that time the agency also established a mechanism for individual carriers to request confidentiality in order to avoid competitive harm. If confidentiality is granted, release of information for that carrier will be restricted for three years. BTS says it will continue to monitor the issue and seek feedback from respondents and data users.
