AAA announced this week that it supports revisions to hours-of-service regulations — and the increased use of satellite tracking systems to enforce those regulations.
Delegates to AAA's annual meeting in San Diego said the hours-of-service regulations must have a sound scientific basis that stresses sleep, rest and operating-hour factors.
Delegates also supported the expanded use of satellite tracking to more accurately monitor the hours that truck drivers are behind the wheel and to increase the efficiency of shipping. AAA said it supports "reasonable access" to trucking company GPS data by government regulatory agencies when a company has a history of violations or is being investigated.
AAA also called on the U.S. Department of Transportation to "exercise prudence" in granting requests for exemptions and waivers from truck safety regulations and in authorizing pilot programs. The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, passed last year, gave the agency more latitude in these areas. The DOT recently began granting waivers to drivers who did not meet federal vision requirements but demonstrated excellent safety records.
