Trucker Given 60 Days For Fatal Crash
October 06, 1998
Oct. 8 – An Indiana truck driver is serving 60 days in jail for causing a chain-reaction accident that killed four people in Ohio.
The Toledo Blade reports that Jonnie Morris, 58, of Muncie, IN, pleaded guilty in Allen County, Ohio, to four counts of vehicular homicide, a misdemeanor. Morris slammed his tractor-trailer rig into a line of cars that had slowed on I-75 for an oversized load Feb. 10. The truck rolled over several of the vehicles, some of which caught fire.
Morris, who has been a truck driver 23 years, choked back tears as he apologized to the court, the paper reported. “I am sorry. I’ll see this every day for the rest of my life. I think I did everything I could to avoid this. There just was nothing left to do.”
Morris had earlier said the throttle failed, but police said testing showed it was working properly.
Several civil lawsuits are pending against Morris.
