Oct. 8 – Six rest areas being closed in Arkansas will be converted into parking areas for truckers, reports the Associated Press. The state Highway Commission voted Sept. 22 to close 12 rest areas, six of them on noninterstate U.S. highways.
The state Highway and Transportation Department will demolish the restroom buildings at the rest areas – two each on Interstate 55 in Mississippi County, I-40 in Conway County and I-40 in Clark County.
“There are trucks that are parking on the shoulder and on exit ramps,” said Dan Flowers, director of the highway department. “That creates a hazardous situation, so we need to give truck drivers a place where they can park.”
However, the six converted rest areas also can be used by the state Highway Police for setting up checkpoints and weigh stations.
