NTSB: I-5 Bridge Collapse Due to Systemic Errors

The collapse of an interstate highway bridge that was struck by a truck carrying an oversize load was ultimately caused by a series of deficiencies in a system intended to safeguard the passage of oversized loads over Washington State’s roadways, the National Transportation Safety Board determined in a meeting Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

NTSB Releases Documents in I-5 Bridge Collapse Ahead of Final Report

As part of its continuing investigation into the collapse of an interstate highway bridge in Washington State last year, the National Transportation Safety Board opened the public accident docket on Wednesday, releasing over 2,000 pages of documents.

Flammable Cargo Prohibited on I-90 Between Seattle and Mercer Island

Flammable cargo will be prohibited from traveling in both directions of I-90 inside the Mount Baker tunnel and the Mercer Island lid until 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. The same restriction will go into place from the evening of Friday, Sept. 20 through the morning of Saturday, Sept. 21.

Washington State I-5 Bridge to Open This Weekend

The Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge in Burlington, Wash., is on schedule to be completed later his week -- but there will still be detours through mid-November, according to the Washington State Transportation Department.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its preliminary report into the May 23 bridge collapse along Interstate 5 in Washington, sending two vehicles into the Skagit River below.

I-5 Bridge Set to Reopen in Mid-June with Temporary Fix

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has announced a plan to replace the collapsed portion of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River near Mt. Vernon after it was damaged by a truck hauling an oversize load on Thursday, closing a section of the route.

Authorities in Indiana and Washington are beginning a new effort targeting dangerous driving by operators of both semis and four-wheelers. The Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks program from the Federal Motor Carrier Administration uses both education and high-visibility enforcement in an effort to reduce truck-involved crashes.
