NTSB Says Straight-Truck Safety Needs More Attention

The National Transportation Safety Board says the government should consider making medium-duty straight truck drivers get a commercial driver's license, following a five-year study that found these trucks were involved in a disproportionate number of fatalities.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg Dead at 89

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., a longtime advocate of tough truck safety legislation, has died at age 89. Most recently, he reintroduced a bill that would restrict truck size and weight limits, continuing his long opposition to any easing of those standards.

ATRI Research: Medium-Duty Crash Numbers Could be Dragging Down Heavy-Duty Stats

The American Transportation Research Institute has just released research findings that looked into variations in safety trends across different classes of large trucks. The study separated and evaluated a decade of medium- and heavy-duty truck crash records and identified trends, with medium-duty trucks generally performing worse than heavy-duty.
