Daimler Trucks Monday unveiled the Highway Pilot Connect, a truck platooning system that has already been approved for use in a limited area in Germany, while its Highway Pilot autonomous driving system has been approved for use throughout the country.

Truck Platooning Report Shows Fuel Economy Gains

A report on the first phase of research into the possible benefits of truck platooning technologies showed that all trucks in a platoon gained fuel efficiencies, with the lead truck gaining as much as a 5 percent improvement while the trailing truck got up to 10 percent improvement.

A Volvo Group subsidiary is investing in Peloton Technology, which is working on a truck "platooning" system that would save fuel and reduce congestion by allowing trucks to travel in a close-following "platoon" on the highway.

Truck Platooning System Offers Fuel Savings Potential

Peloton Technology, Menlo Park, Calif., demonstrated its two-truck platooning system May 8 along a stretch of I-80 just east of Reno. The technology makes use of a forward collision avoidance system and vehicle-to-vehicle communication to allow two trucks to travel closer together than would normally be safe.

A new Federal Highway Administration research project will test "platooning" two trucks with the goal of saving fuel and decreasing traffic congestion. The team will research partial automation for two-truck platooning, integrating vehicle-to-vehicle communications with adaptive cruise control.
