Cummins Power South recently launched a new comprehensive diesel engine training program. The three-month graduate program, entitled CPSUniversity, is designed to provide rigorous in-depth training on Cummins heavy-duty and mid-range engine products and is currently being offered to diesel engine technology students who have completed a qualified diesel technology program.

CPSUniversity is the vision of Geoff Walker, vice president of operations and distribution. In an effort to increase technician recruitment and training and to support the company's long term strategic objective of Lead with Service, a model of what once existed as Cummins South University was redesigned to provide further specialized training to graduate technicians who would then be committed to CPS upon graduation.

The twelve week diesel engine program, based at the CPS Technical Service Training Center in Tampa, Fla., is led by Bill Sigmund, director of technical support - engine business, and John Black, training manager. The program, whose curriculum is developed and taught by CPSU Training Instructor, Kevin Parson, includes the following elements:

  • Only the top graduates of approved VoTech diesel technology programs or those with related work experience, including military training, are considered.
  • Upon graduation, students offered employment agree to a three-year commitment with Cummins Power South and may specify location preferences within the CPS footprint.
  • Upon completion, graduates are qualified on Cummins Mid-Range and Heavy Duty Automotive products (1991-2010). In addition, students receive broader training on all the systems used at Cummins Power South, including JSA Safety, Cummins Insite, Cummins Expert Diagnostic System (EDS), Cummins QuickServe Online and Guardian Inspection.

The first CPSU class graduated in April. The next twelve week training session begins May 20 and is comprised of eight registered students with three alternates on a waiting list.

Applications for the Sept. 4 session of CPSUniversity are currently being accepted.  Prospective students wish to apply to the program, may visit www.cumminspowersouth.com/CPSU/ to learn more.
