The full UT-6-plus system from SmartTruck has four separate components that work in harmony to sculpt the air flow under, over and around the trailer.

The heart of the system, the UT-1 under-tray device looks simple enough, but there's more going on down here than meets the eye. Smart Truck's chief scientist, Mike Henderson, explains how it works.

I applaud SmartTruck offering an explanation of the aerodynamic function of their system. However, their description, like most of the aero product market, is for the best case scenario (i.e. no crosswind, high speed and optimum position of the tandem). The problem is that the best case condition exists less than 10% of the time during routine operations They fail to explain the function of their device with changes in speed, crosswind and tandem location. All of these factors will reduce the benefit of the system and mostly likely will increase fuel use under certain combinations. As a science based design shop SmartTruck they should follow accepted engineering practices and publish their scientific claims in a peer reviewed professional engineering or scientific journal.

Agreed Richard. Since the PIT Study came out a few months ago, industry consensus seems to be that this system does something, but does not produce anything close to the results the company suggests. The comments I've read from their engineers insisting on computer modeling and 'coast down testing' as the new gold standard are also a bit of a red flag in an industry that demands real world data.
