The North Dakota Department of Transportation is now allowing members of the military to apply commercial driving experience obtained while in the military to acquire a North Dakota CDL.

Due to new federal guidelines implemented in 2011 and adopted in North Dakota this year, military personnel who gain experience driving military commercial vehicles can request to have the road test portion of their North Dakota CDL test waived.

"We feel these servicemen and women have gained very valuable skills while serving our country and it is important to allow them to utilize these skills once they return to their civilian lives," says Drivers License Division Director Glenn Jackson.

The military applicant can visit a drivers license office location or go on the NDDOT website at www.dot.nd.gov to complete the form, known as "Application for CDL Skills Test WaiverMilitary," and mail it to the Transportation Building in Bismarck. Once the application has been reviewed and all standard records checks have been verified, the applicant will receive approval notification. The applicant will then go to the examiner location to complete the commercial drivers license process, as well as meet the visual and medical qualifications to receive their North Dakota CDL.

The locations and hours of operation for all the drivers license testing sites can be found online
at http://www.dot.nd.gov/divisions/driverslicense/docs/1042.pdf
