A New Jersey sleeper berth exemption for the idling of heavy-duty trucks that was originally scheduled to sunset on May 1, 2010, has been delayed for another year.
The delay gives New Jersey truck drivers an exemption from the idling regulation while resting or sleeping in a sleeper berth until May 1, 2011.
The current Department of Environmental Protection regulation prohibits diesel-powered vehicles from idling for more than three consecutive minutes if the vehicle is stopped. The exemption allows for sleeper berth idling.
As part of a statewide effort by the department to reduce diesel emissions in New Jersey, the department approved a measure to phase out sleeper berth idling in July 2007.
