Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed an anti-indemnification bill into law Tuesday night, which protects motor carriers against shipper contracts that hold carriers accountable for the shipper's negligence
.

This includes contracts that a company asks a carrier to sign that indemnifies the company against any liability for loss or damage.

According to a legislative update by the Mid-West Truckers Association, contracts were being forced upon mostly small trucking companies that had no other choice but sign the contracts if they wanted the business.

Other states have signed similar legislation into law, including Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee.
