The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finished work on its long-awaited rule requiring shorter stopping distances for air-braked heavy trucks.

The rule, which NHTSA says will save 227 lives a year, requires that a fully loaded tractor-trailer at 60 mph must be able to stop in 250 feet, 30 percent less than the former standard of 355 feet. A lightly loaded truck must stop within 235 feet. The new requirement will be phased in over four years.

The improved stopping distances can be achieved with existing technology, including drum brakes, disc brakes or hybrid disc/drum systems, the agency said.
