On March 3 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking extending by 18 months a requirement that trailers with antilock brake systems be equipped with an external antilock malfunction indicator lamp.

According to the American Trucking Associations, the indicator lamp requirement, which is included in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 that governs vehicles equipped with air brakes, was originally scheduled to sunset on March 1, but has been extended to Sept. 1, in an interim final rule also published in the March 3 edition of Federal Register.

Under the NPRM, the sunset date would be extended until March 1, 2011. The proposed rulemaking also considers making the requirement permanent.

This rulemaking is in response to a petition from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which has asked that the requirement be made permanent. Comments are due to NHTSA by April 2.
