President Bush's nominee for administrator of the Federal Highway Administration was confirmed by the Senate and says his main task will be to work with Congress on funding the country's transportation infrastructure.

According to published reports, Thomas J. Madison Jr. was previously commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation and the state's deputy secretary for transportation under Gov. George Pataki.

Madison reportedly breezed through his confirmation hearing before the Environment and Public Works Committee, with both the committee's top Republican, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of N.Y., who chaired the hearing, praising the nominee.
