Connecticut's state tax on diesel fuel will rise 7.7 cents per gallon as of July 1.

The Hartford Courant reports that the state tax department is required by law to calculate the tax based on the average wholesale price of deisel between April 1 and March 31 each year. The average wholesale price during that priod was $2.488 per gallon, making the new tax per gallon 44.7 cents.

Michael J. Riley, president of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, told the paper that the increase is going to be "very, very hard on the trucking industry." The price of fuel, he said, is "choking this industry," and said the Connecticut tax will be the highest in the country for diesel.
