Last week, the House and the Senate authorized a 30-day extension of the existing Federal Highway bill that was scheduled to expire earlier this week.

This is the seventh such extension.
The House and the Senate have approved their own versions of a new Highway Bill, but the two measures are still about $11 billion apart. The Senate bill is higher at $295 billion. President Bush has threatened to veto anything over the House's $283.9 billion spending level. A conference committee must resolve the differences between the two bills before the legislation can go to the president for his final approval.
