Trucking companies engaged in the relief effort for Tuesday’s terrorist attack need not apply for exemptions to hours of service or size and weight rules, a Department of Transportation spokesman said.

Since President George W. Bush has declared a national emergency, it is not necessary to ask federal officials for exemptions, said DOT public affairs officer David Longo.
“All they need to do is document what they are doing,” Longo said. Documentation should cover the nature of the cargo, the destination, the status of driver hours, and the weight of the vehicle, he said.
