Hazardous materials haulers should be prepared for closer scrutiny following last week's terrorist attacks.

Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta asked the American Trucking Associations to tell its members that hazmat carriers will be under close observation from both state and local officials for improper placarding and for trucks that are traveling on unusual or unexpected routes.
Hazmat carriers have also been asked to avoid high population centers whenever possible. Drivers are asked to be aware of their surroundings at all times, to lock their trucks if they leave them unattended and to undertake all possible safety measures.
