New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg has spent his 16 years in the Senate plugging away on transportation and other issues. The 75-year-old Democrat has announced he will not run again.

“The highways, rail systems and public-works projects all across new Jersey are testament to Sen. Lautenberg’s accomplishments,” said his Senate colleague from New Jersey, Robert Torricelli.
As chairman of the Senate transportation subcommittee before the Republicans took control in 1995, Lautenberg helped funnel billions in federal aid to road and bridge projects in his state, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Since then, he has still had a lot of pull as the senior Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee.
