EPA Adding Reefers, Test Methods to SmartWay Program

TMC, NASHVILLE – The Environmental Protection Agency is making changes in its voluntary SmartWay program, including adding refrigerated trailers and accepting more testing methods from suppliers who want to get their fuel-saving technologies verified by the agency.

TrailerTails Gain Acceptance, Should Total 200,000 by 2017, ATDynamics Says

TMC, NASHVILLE -- ATDynamics says North American fleets are on track to order 50,000 TrailerTail aerodynamic devices this year, and there’ll be 200,000 on the road by 2017. More than 350 fleets have deployed the aerodynamic devices in the last three years, including numerous Top 100 for-hire and private fleets.

SmartTruck Refutes Recent Test Results

SmartTruck said a recent third-party computational fluid dynamics study conducted by CD-adapco showed SmartTruck’s UT6 trailer aerodynamics system reduces drag by more than 10%, translating into highway fuel savings of approximately 7%

UPDATED -- Officials with SmartTruck fired back at testing results announced a month ago showing trailer undercarriage air deflectors result in fuel savings far less than some manufacturers are claiming, releasing its own third-party research at the American Trucking Associations' annual convention.

Study: Fuel Consumption of New Trucks Can Be Reduced by More

Truck, engine and trailer makers already are investigating some of these fuel-saving technologies through the SuperTruck program.

Fuel consumption of new heavy-duty vehicles could be reduced by more than a third by 2025, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, if the next phase of greenhouse gas/fuel economy standards pushes improvements in areas such as trailer aerodynamics and waste-heat energy recovery.

CARB Issues Electric & Hybrid Reefer Regulatory Guidance
