Paper Transport Adds 20 Natural Gas-Powered Kenworth T660s To Regional Fleet

Paper Transport Inc. plans to replace 25% of its diesel-powered units in its 400-truck fleet with trucks running on CNG by the end of the year.<br />

Paper Transport began testing two Kenworth natural gas trucks in 2012 and this spring the company became one of Kenworth’s first customers to run CNG-powered Kenworth T660s with the Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine, according to the company.

KW Exec: Natural Gas Gaining Popularity but Diesel Will Still Dominate

&amp;ldquo;Fair amount of complexity&amp;rdquo; comes with dual-fuel Westport GX/HD, as on this T800. It has a tank for diesel exhaust fluid (with blue cap) and a diesel particulate filter (the shorter stack behind the cab), as well as large cryogenic saddle tanks (one on each side) to store liquefied natural gas.

CORRECTED -- Kenworth Truck Co. sees a lot of promise in natural gas-powered vehicles, so it featured them last week at gatherings for dealers, customers and trade press writers at its plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. But diesel-powered trucks form a huge majority of those on the road and will continue to dominate the Class 8 business, one of the company’s executives commented to reporters.

SmarTorque2 ISX15 mates with Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated mechanical transmission via special programming to &amp;ldquo;downspeed&amp;rdquo; cruising RPMs and yield high efficiency, the companies say.

Cummins Inc. and Eaton Corp. have devised a fuel-saving, integrated engine-transmission combination that will rival proprietary offerings from some truck builders.
