Duane Reade, a retail pharmacy, announced a partnership with Smith Electric Vehicles to add Newton zero-emission, all-electric commercial trucks to its delivery fleet.

The additions to Duane Reade's delivery fleet are ideal for urban delivery applications that demand stop-and-go driving, and have a range in excess of 100 miles on a single overnight charge. The truck has a 16,000-pound payload and an annual operating cost one-third to half that of a comparable diesel truck.
The Newton produces zero emissions, is virtually silent, and features a regenerative braking system that reduces brake wear while recovering some energy to the truck's battery.

The electric fleet purchase is part of an ongoing effort by Duane Reade to reduce energy use. Other initiatives include LED store lighting and environmentally friendly flooring.
