Wildcat Strike Shuts Ports in New York and New Jersey

More than 1,000 longshoremen walked off the job at New York and New Jersey ports on Friday morning, Jan. 29, effectively shutting down the terminals in a port system that receives nearly 30 percent of all cargo on the East Coast.

Traffic in and around the ports became gridlocked, with hundreds of truckers reportedly idling at the gates or inside the terminals.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. EST, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey gave its most recent update, stating on its website: “We appreciate your patience & cooperation as we safely & efficiently cleared the marine terminals. As we receive more info, we’ll keep you posted.”

PANYNJ had advised of the work stoppage shortly before 11 a.m. EST: “There is an apparent labor walk off at all PONYNJ terminals. No truck operations at this time.”

About an hour and a half later, the joint agency issued this update: “Due to the current work stoppage in the port, no new trucks will be allowed to queue on port roadways. Do not send trucks the Port at this time.”

According to PANYNJ, the striking workers are members of the International Longshoremen's Association, a key union at the ports in New York City and New Jersey.

A news report indicated that the job action was not sanctioned by the International Longshoremen's Association, making it a wildcat strike. An ILA spokesman said the walkout took many union officials by surprise, per the Associated Press.

 Another union official told NBC 4 New York that the job action could be traced to numerous grievances including concerns about the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor's role in collective bargaining, regulations on time off after injuries and drug-testing protocols.

The affected terminals include Port Newark, the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, Port Jersey in Bayonne, Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island, and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn.

    As the end of the Obama regime gets closer, the communist longshoreman's union, shuts down East Coast commerce as a show of power. If Bernie or Hillary takes power, we can expect unions to rule the economy, and non-union workers to be punished by the government.

    This union should be held criminally liable for any loss of income or revenue by people or businesses, to deter future defiance of law and agreements.

    I hate when uninformed, partisan mouths spout off nonsense like the posters before me. The American public is the dumbest, loudest and most dangerous it's ever been which is why people like Trump, Cruz and Hillary even have platforms to stand on.

    These workers are exercising their rights as Americans to fight for better working conditions. The fact that they did it WITHOUT the union's blessing obviously means that the union cannot be blamed for the walkout.
    It can also suggest that these workers have lost confidence in their union's ability and/or willingness to work for them, so they decided to act on their own. I actually hope this starts a trend. Workers have been stomped on by corporations, mindless partisan government cronies, and even their own corrupt unions for far too long. If things don't straighten up soon in this country, there will be a worker's revolt which may not end well for anyone.

    These truckers have the right like any of us to quit working for a bad company and go work elsewhere. MC your beginning tirade shows you are guilty of what you accuse others of. Don't attack the messenger. Answer his points.

    The truckers are the ones who were on strike. It was the longshoreman, which forces the truckers to sit Idly by with no pay.

    Its unfortunate about the truckers sitting. That is why we save for intangibles. Not sure why we all wouldn't want that kind of control of our work enviroment.Power to the people could, we are the people. As drivers we are walked on by more major corporations than government. Lobbyist from these mega corporations write the bills in congress our legislatures just sign theml.

    More power to the long shoremen on their strike to improve their working conditions. This is where the complete transportation industry needs to get on board and support and join in on a national trucking strike to improve the freight rates across our country for the truckers and drivers, whose with me,

    I will say just one thing MC..... Together we stand, divided we fall... At least these truck driver stand together to get it done. We drivers are small and looked down upon as 'dumb truck drivers'. I do not like this and more power to the Longshoreman.

    It's unfortunate that the transportation industry is in such an uproar
    The longshoremen I'm sure have valid issues and they should be addressed regardless of the outcome, though the current result is a significant amount of people are without work including the truckers secretaries officials and the businesses that rely on the freight.
    It'd be a nice change for clear communication between the disgruntled parties in a timely manner.
    Let's all hope for a quick resolve

    Another reason to be against being forced to join a union to have a job. Any of these people can look for other jobs if they don't like their current place of work. The employer would be forced to adjust to the needs of the workers if they are unable to find qualified people to work under the current arrangement.

    Wouldn't it be nice to see truck drivers all across the country do the same thing as these guys. Maybe then we could get the regulations cut down and make the big companies like J.B. Hunt and others that are in the ATA stop pushing for more regulations and siding with the fmcsa just to make life harder for independent truckers.
