It may soon be easier when it comes to getting container chassis for trucks and using them at the East Coast’s busiest port.

The Journal of Commerce reports an agreement has been reached agreed on a plan creating a “gray” chassis pool that would allow truckers to freely interchange chassis throughout the Port of New York and New Jersey as soon as early next year. Currently there are separate chassis pools that do not interchange equipment, forcing truckers to take extra trips to pick up, drop off or exchange equipment.

It is hoped the move will alleviate what some say is one of the biggest contributors to congestion at the port. The story notes over the past several years have been difficult when it comes to dealing with container chassis since ocean shipping companies got out of the business of providing them.

The move follows a decision by most of the players at the Port of Los Angeles last month when they agreed to create a similar chassis pool that is expected to begin operation in about two and half months.
