The U.S. House on Tuesday passed legislation on Tuesday afternoon providing enough money for the Highway Trust Fund through May 2015.

The vote of 367 to 55 prevents the fund, used to pay for federal road and bridge projects, from going broke as early as next month. The U.S. DOT has warned that if more money is not appropriated for the fund, the department will start trimming payments to pay for construction, idling many projects.

The fund is running low on money due to federal receipts of gasoline and diesel taxes not keeping pace with road funding demands. Out of the 181 Republicans who voted to advance the measure, 45 were opposed. In contrast, 186 Democrats signed off on the proposal, while just ten voted against it.

The measure now heads to the Senate where it is expected pass, according to The Hill.

It reports the bill would be offset with about $6.4 billion in revenue from pension smoothing, another $3.5 billion from customs user fees and a final $1 billion from an account set up to deal with leaking underground storage tanks.

This idea is so dumb, on it's face. A blind person can see that not wanting to pay for a system, of funding that has largely worked for years, IS JUST SUPPORTING THE FAILED IDEA THAT TAXES, ARE BAD ALL TAXES. OF ALL THE WAYS OF FUNDING THINGS IN GOVERNMENT, THAT ONLY GOVERNMENT CAN DO, THIS IDEA IS SO SIMPLE. I GUESS THAT THE POLITICAN'S JUST WANT THE DO AWAY WITH A FUNDING IDEA, THAT THE TAX PAYER CAN SEE CLEARLY, WHAT IT IS USED FOR. It
started the funding of highway construction, when IKE created the
INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THEN WE HERE THAT WE NEED TO MAKE TOLL ROADS, INSTEAD. IN EFFECT THIS IS A TOLL ROAD SYSTEM. EVERYONE IN THE USA USES IT, CARS-TRUCKS-AND ANYONE THAT EATS LIVES IN A HOUSE, HAS A JOB OR NOT. INDIRECTLY FOR SURE. HOW THE IDEA THAT CUTTING TAXES WILL FIX EVERYTHING, SOMEHOW AND WILL PAY FOR THINGS, ESCAPES ME. after over 3 million safe miles, as I see it the system look like it has largely worked.

Politian's cannot keep their stickey dishonest fingers out of large sums of money like SS and the Taxes collected for the highway fund in the form of fuel taxes and user fees. It's very simple: all monies collected for highways, roads, etc. should ONLY be spent for highways, roads, etc.. NOT bike paths, sidewalks and playgrounds as in SC., not lite rail, not trees, flowers, and any other pet project a local or county board member wants to sneak on a budget for his friends to vote yes," lets get the money from the DOT, they have billions".. All State DOT Depts. must say NO to projects that have no funding. Once again; All tax money collected for American roads and highways must be spent on American roads and highways....
