When the New Hampshire Senate joined the House in approving a speed limit increase of 5 mph on interstate 93 from Canterbury to the Vermont border, Governor Maggie Hassan was still not keen on the idea. On Friday, with the backing of the Senate, Gov. Hassan now says she's ready to sign the bill into law.
The speed limit on the roadway would increase to 70 mph except over a stretch through Franconia Notch that narrow and winding.
The House approved the change through a 292-65 vote on House Bill 146. The Senate last week passed the bill on a voice vote.
According to published reports, Gov. Hassan is still reviewing the legislation, but is expected to add her signature to it.
Highway Safety and the Department of Public Safety had opposed the speed limit increase for safety reasons.
