The federal Highway Trust Fund is likely to turn negative next year, said a former DOT executive to a shippers' group this week.

Jeff Shane, who until recently was undersecretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, spoke at the Spring Policy Forum of the National Industrial Transportation League Wednesday.

According to Dow Jones Newswire, Shane warned the group that Congress needs to look at different ways of funding infrastructure, whether it be congestion pricing, public/private partnerships or other mechanisms.

However the situation is addressed, Shane said, it could affect the construction business, which is relying more heavily on government infrastructure projects in the wake of the housing crisis.
