A revised interpretation of laws from the North Carolina Attorney General's office means 53-foot-long trailers are allowable on U.S. 321 and U.S. 421.
U.S. 221 between Boone and the South Carolina state line will also be accessible to 53-footers.
According to the Watauga Democrat, the ruling also allows such trucks access to within 3 miles of those highways, meaning they have a limited right to make local deliveries on smaller or secondary roads.
State Sen. Steve Goss and the Watauga County commissioners had asked for clarification of the law after local trucking companies complained they had been getting citations from the highway patrol.
