Mid-America Stars & Stripes Event Kicks Off the Truck Beauty Show Season

The 7th Annual Paul K. Young Memorial Truck Beauty Show, produced by Stars & Stripes Truck Show Events drew more than 100 entries vying for honors in the country's premier truck beauty show.

The event held as part of the Mid-America Trucking Show held here from March 22-24 featured head-turning trucks and tough competition.
For the third year, the Paul K. Young Memorial also hosted the Big Rig Build Off, pitting truck customizers from throughout North America in a competition to see who could build the most impressive truck, limited only by the builder's imagination.
Harvey and Karen Zander, St. Louis Park, Minn., repeated as Best of Show winners in the Bobtail Class with their 2001 International 9900, "Icy Blue 2," which features a snow-themed mural and paint scheme.
Taking Best of Show honors in the Combination Class was Jerry Beaudoin, Southington, Conn., with "SRS" a striking 2007 black and orange Peterbilt 379 and 2007 J&J dump trailer.
The People's Choice award, voted on by attendees of the Mid-America Trucking Show, went to Gary Gallopo, from Keyport, NJ and his 1980 Yellow Kenworth W9L, "Bride of the Beast"- a limited mileage creation with a thumping sound system.
The Big Rig Build Off featured truck customizers from as far away as Canada and California. Challenging for the top trophy and bragging rights were: Jeff Botelho, Custom Image Motors, Los Banos, Calif.; Phil Langevin, Valley Custom Truck, Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada; Clint Moore, Kansas City Peterbilt, Kansas City, Mo.; Steve Van Zytveld, Ridin' High Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Jim Raines, S&J Truck Sales, Forth Wayne, Ind.
Again, based on voting by show attendees, Jim Raines of S&J Sales took the top honors with a modified Peterbilt.
New for this year's show was the use of certified truck show judges. "Nothing is as important as fair and equitable judging," says Stars & Stripes Director Bud Farquhar. "We have learned a lot over the years and wanted to take this experience, improve it, and apply it to all our five events. The competitors spend an incredible amount of time/money/effort when participating in our shows. We owe them a level of judging that ensures they receive an accurate/objective result."
Under the direction of Stars & Stripes Manager of Training Neal Holsomback, the Mid-America judges attended a two-day training session designed to give the judges - all local law enforcement officers - a clear understanding of what is expected in the judging process.
Stars & Stripe will conduct four more shows this year in Wildwood Fla., Las Vegas, Reno and Pomona, Calif.
