November retail sales were 1 percent higher than the previous month and up 5.6 percent from last year, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau. Excluding automobiles, retail sales were up 1.1 percent
from the previous month and 5.3 percent from the same period a year ago.
This was the first increase since July and a better report than many economist had expected. Early discounting was credited for much of the rise but analysts said consumers were also buoyed by an expanding labor market and rising wages.
Only furniture retailers reported a decline in sales, clothing retailers said sales were about the same. Electronics, sporting goods, grocery stores, restaurants and online retailers reported gains.
