WTI Transport recently began accepting experienced over the road drivers without flatbed knowledge. The company opened a training facility to get these drivers ready to pull flatbed.

The facility, located in Tuscaloosa, Ala., welcomed its first class in August.
The facility has one large indoor classroom, capable of holding up to 25 students. Hands-on training is available outside, with two trailers loaded with different types of freight. These help drivers learn strapping and tarping in order to properly secure their loads. A tractor-trailer is set up to review pre-trip inspections and a state-of-the-art skills course tests a driver's ability to turn and maneuver. Several trainers are involved in teaching every class, with each trainer handling the portion of the curriculum they specialized in.
WTI Transport is a flatbed carrier servicing 26 states, primarily in the Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and lower East Coast. Main shipments consist of roofing, building material products and all types of iron and steel products. The company has grown from a small 40-truck operation in the 1980s to more than 250 power units today.
