The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has declined to take action in the purchase by United Parcel Service Inc. of Overnite Corp. That means the deal will not be blocked by government authorities and can go forward as planned.
The sale is expected to close in the 3rd quarter of 2005.
UPS is the largest carrier of any kind in the U.S., but has so far not offered LTL service like its principle rival, Fedex, which owns LTL carrier Fedex Freight.
The UPS network now handles worldwide air and ground transport of packages weighing up to 150 pounds. According to Reuters, Overnite derives 88 percent of its sales from LTL, with the rest from truckload.
