The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it is installing ramp meters on Interstate 75/85 in Atlanta.
The ramp meters, similar to traffic signals, will be installed on the south bound entrance ramps at Spring and Williams streets, Ellis Street, Edgewood Avenue and Freedom Parkway.
The ramp meters allow vehicles to flow one-at-a-time at these two-lane entrance ramps. The devices are designed to regulate the flow of traffic onto the Interstates during peak traffic hours. The new meters will be operational this spring. Motorists, who fail to obey ramp meter signals, will be fined as if they ran a traffic light.
Meanwhile, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Department of Transportation announced they will activate ramp meters at the following freeway entrance ramps in northwest Las Vegas on U.S. 95 on March 29: Cheyenne Avenue southbound entrance ramp; Lake Mead Boulevard southbound entrance ramp (heading west): and Lake Mead Boulevard southbound entrance ramp (heading east).
The Las Vegas ramp meters will operate only when the freeway is congested, usually during morning and evening peak commute times.
