Missouri is considering placing five toll plazes on I-70 between Kansas City and St. Louis.

The Associated Press reported that commercial vehicle tolls could be as high as $45 for a round-trip. According the Missouri Department of Transportation web site, tolls would help fund a comprehensive overhaul of the 50-year-old roadway.
The Missouri DOT has launched a project it calls Improve I-70. “I-70 has immediate needs that must be met,” declares the project introduction on a special web site -- www.improvei70.org.
According to the site, seven independent studies are under way to determine how best to rebuild the critical roadway, but currently “there no funding … allocated for the design or construction of any major I-70 improvements.”
The site says that tolls would not be able to cover all anticipated costs of expanding I-70 from four to six lanes. Traffic between Kansas City and St. Louis is expected to double in the next 10 years.
Illinois and six other states neighboring Missouri have the authority to charge tolls. Tolls are already collected on sections of I-70 in Kansas.
