Intermec Technologies Corp., Everett, Wash., announced that it has been selected by FedEx Express to help develop a new dispatch system.
FedEx will initially deploy the system to couriers in China.
The new system, called GPRS-Dispatch, combines software developed by FedEx's GSP Technologies group and Intermec handheld computers with integrated GPRS wide-area radios.
GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) is a wireless communication service based on GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) that provides a continuous connection to the Internet. (In the U.S., GPRS service is provided by AT&T Wireless, Cingular and T-Mobile.)
The real-time data collection and communications capabilities of the Intermec 760 mobile computer was customized for FedEx.
