Roehl has announced the fleet-wide adoption of Pre-Pass/EZ-Pass technology for its drivers.
"The two programs remove some of the delay and occupational hassle of OTR driving by reducing the number of stops for weigh stations and toll booths," said Leon Palmer, Roehl vice president of operations. "The more we can do to keep our drivers moving during their hours of service, the more they earn," he added.
The Pre-Pass/E-Z Pass program is one of several steps the company has taken in the past few months to maximize the earning potential of its drivers in the face of the new federal hours of service regulations.
Under the Pre-Pass program, a transponder is mounted in each truck. As the truck approaches a weigh station, a signal tells the driver whether or not to pull in -- considering among other factors, the company’s compliance history. Based on the company’s strong safety and compliance record, the system can reduce scale stops for Roehl drivers by as much as 90%. E-Z Pass works in a similar manner for participating toll roads and bridges --collecting the toll automatically so the driver doesn’t have to stop.
"In addition to helping them take home more earnings, both systems benefit drivers in several other ways as well," Palmer said. "Drivers don’t need to carry as much cash for tolls, there are no receipts to submit, no waiting for reimbursement and less time is spent in scale lines then merging back onto the highway."
Roehl also offers the Pre-Pass program to its independent contractors.
