The American Trucking Assns. (ATA) has named three motor carriers as winners of its 2003 National Truck Safety Contest.

The companies, representing large, mid-size and small fleets, are ABF Freight System Inc. of Fort Smith, Ark.; Pitt Ohio Express of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and CLI Transport of Altoona, Pa.
The winning companies, judged to have the best overall safety programs and records of safety initiatives among contest entries, will be presented with the President’s Trophy during ATA’s Management Conference and Exhibition in San Antonio, Texas, in October.
The trophy award, sponsored by Great West Casualty Co., recognizes fleets with the highest records of safe operation and the best programs to promote safety throughout the trucking industry and among all highway users and the general public.
This is the first award of its kind for CLI Transport, a small size fleet with less than 25 million operating miles annually. CLI says it applies the personal touch to its safety efforts, giving every employee the personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others, both on and off the job. And, CLI provides the latest in equipment and facilities to help assure a safe work environment.
This is the third time around for Pitt Ohio Express (25 million to 100 million miles operating miles annually). At the Pittsburgh-based motor carrier all safety, health, quality and environmental issues are all directly related. Pitt Ohio seeks perfection in these areas through training, dedication, and a belief that a good attitude can lead directly to attainment of goals.
It is President’s Trophy No. 5 for ABF Freight System Inc. (more than 100 million miles). ABF practices safety on a day-to-day basis with all employees identifying and controlling areas of risk. This assures continuous improvement, helping to keep a companywide commitment to the safety of all employees--and the general public.
"The trucking industry is extremely proud of all of our motor carriers and the example they set for all industry when it comes to workplace safety," said Bill Graves, ATA president and CEO.
