The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning motorists of delays during resurfacing on I-75 and I-85 south of Atlanta, and is closing two rest areas along I-85 in Gwinnett County for renovation.
DOT officials are expecting heavy delays during weekend construction on two major resurfacing projects on interstates 75 and 85. Delays are expected to be especially bad on the I-75 project, which runs between I-285 and I-675 in Henry and Clayton counties. Officials recommend using I-675 to bypass the construction zone.
I-85 is being resurfaced from Flat Shoals Road to Riverdale Road in south Fulton County. This includes all the on- and off-ramps in the area, plus the “common area” where I-85 and I-285 run adjacent to each other.
The first major weekend of work starts Friday, Sept. 6. Work will be done between 9 p.m. Fridays and 5 a.m. Mondays. Expect single and double lane closures and some weeknight work as well.
Starting Thursday, Sept. 5, the northbound and southbound rest areas along Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County will close for 30 days.
"The rest areas need to be upgraded, and the fastest way to do it is to close them and get the work done without people using the facilities," explained District Engineer Larry Dent. "There are plenty of places for people to stop and get a snack or use the bathroom at the interchanges in Gwinnett County."
