James March, a Yellow Transportation ‘twins” driver based in Lancaster, Pa., is the 2002 National Truck Driving Grand Champion.
March topped more than 340 other professional truck drivers from all across the country in the National Truck Driving Championships, completed this weekend in Milwaukee and sponsored by the American Trucking Associations.
The contestants were the state champions (in nine truck types) from all 50 states. In their respective classes, they compared their expertise in the driving skills they use daily. The tests included an alley dock, a rear line stop, a side park, a scales stop, a right turn, a front line stop, and straight line driving through a diminishing clearance.
March, who also won the individual “Twins” competition, succeeds another Yellow Transportation driver, Ray Simon on Minnesota, as the Grand Champion. Joining March as champions in their respective classes:
Auto Transporter: Joseph Hoffman, Hadley Auto Transport, Arizona
Five-Axle: John Plumer, Wal-Mart, New Hampshire
Flatbed: John Roberts, Publix Supermarkets, Florida
Four-Axle: Larry Breen, Wal-Mart, Florida
Five-Axle Sleeper: Ben Moore, Wal-Mart, Georgia
Straight Truck: David Murphy, Yellow Transportation, Idaho
Tank Truck: Dale Knox, Con-Way Central Express, Pennsylvania
Three-Axle: Richard Seigle, Roadway Express, Illinois
Arizona’s driver delegation brought home the team trophy as the state with the highest scores and final placements.
Collectively, the 2002 National Truck Driving Championship contestants have driven more than 432 million accident-free miles.
