Several new resurfacing projects have begun or are scheduled to begin in coming weeks in Tennessee.

Standard practice in Tennessee is to resurface interstates every 8 years and state routes every 12 years. Officials say this keeps roadways in good condition meaning a smoother ride for commuters. It also reduces the need for major repairs.
“If you wait to resurface until you can see cracks in the road, the repairs are more costly because potholes begin in the subsurface material,” says Tennessee DOT Region Director Paul Degges.
In the Nashville area major projects include:
  • I-40 from west of Newsom Station to Charlotte Pike
  • Gallatin Road from Two Mile Pike to the Sumner County line
  • Ellington Parkway from Spring Street to East Trinity Lane
  • Hermitage Avenue/Lebanon Road from Peabody Street to Donelson Hills Drive
In west Tennessee, major projects include:
  • I-40 from mile marker 35 in Fayette County to mile marker 46 in Haywood County
  • US-72, Poplar Avenue, in Memphis from I-240 to SR-177, Germantown Road
  • In Shelby County, US-51 from Big Creek Bridge to the Tipton County line.
  • US-412 in Madison County from US-70 to SR-152.
“Resurfacing does require lane closures during non-peak hours and may cause some inconvenience, “ says Degges. “We are asking motorists to be patient during this busy season. Most resurfacing projects take only a couple of months to complete.”
